4 Reasons You Should Use Your Vehicle's AC System In The Winter

Posted on

Most car owners stop using their air conditioning once winter rolls around. However, using your air conditioning during the winter months has its advantages. Here are a few reasons why it would be smart to use your air conditioning during the winter months.

Your Air Conditioning Will Help Defog Your Vehicle's Windows

One of the biggest reasons you should turn on your air conditioner during the winter months is that it can help defog your windows. Your air conditioning system is designed to release dry air. When you turn on your air conditioning system, it will act like a build in dehumidifier and remove the excess moisture from the air.

Turn your car's temperature setting to hot, press the defrost button, then press your air condition button. When you do this, your air conditioner will produce the results described above much more quickly than your defroster can do on its own.

The Parts Inside Your Air Conditioner Need To Move

Your air conditioning system is comprised of multiple moving parts. When these parts don't get to move and stretch for months on end, they can become seized. When you really need your air conditioning again next spring, you may find out that you have a few parts that need to be replaced because they have seized up. If you just turn on your air conditioning from time to time, you can prevent this from happening.

The Liquids In Your Air Conditioner Need To Move

In addition to the parts inside of your air conditioning, the liquid inside of your air conditioner needs to move every once in a while as well. Your air conditioning system uses a small amount of oil and refrigerant. The liquids need to flow every once in a while in order to keep the components of your air conditioning lubricated.

Regular Use Will Prevent Mold & Bacteria From Developing

Finally, if you don't use your air conditioner every once in a while in the off months, bacteria and mold can grow inside of your system. When you don't use your air conditioner, moisture just sits inside of it and makes a perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria to thrive. Turning on your air conditioning throughout the winter will prevent your air conditioner from smelling funky when you use it again in the spring.

This winter, don't forget to turn on your air conditioner from time to time when you get in your vehicle. Turning on your air conditioning system will prevent mold and bacteria from developing and will keep all the parts and components inside ready for next spring; plus, your A/C button does a great job at defogging your windows in the winter months.

If your air conditioner seems to be acting funny, schedule a repair appointment with a company like Redlands Auto Electric sooner rather than later.
