Tips For Fixing Stone Chips In Your Windshield

Posted on

Do you have a stone chip in your windshield that you want to repair? It may be right in your field of vision, or you simply want to fix it so that the chip doesn't turn into damage that is much bigger. Here are some tips for how you can fix a stone chip on your own using a DIY kit.

Clean Out The Chip

Start by cleaning out the chip with a push pin, which may come with your kit already. This will help get rid of any debris or loose glass that is in the chip before you get started. You'll then want to wipe the area down with a cloth when finished to get any debris off the glass surface.

Attach The Bowl

Your kit will come with an adhesive backing that is circular in shape and has a hole in the center, which should go around the stone chip on your windshield. This can be applied directly to the glass now that it is clean and prepared to repair the chip.

Once the adhesive backing is in place, you can take the film off the top of the material and apply the piece called the plastic bowl. This has a flat plastic base that will line up with the backing, and have a place for you to insert the resin material. Make sure that you line up the bowl with the adhesive backing carefully so it lines up.

Fill The Bowl With Resin

You can now cut open the resin tube provided with your DIY kit and fill the bowl with it. It will help to have a rag nearby to clean up any resin that spills over and gets onto the glass. You can then insert the provided plunger into the bowl and pull up on it, which creates a vacuum in the bowl and removes all air from it. After waiting the appropriate amount of time, you'll press in on the plunger to put pressure on the resin. Once again, wait the appropriate amount of time as indicated by the provided directions.

Remove The Bowl

You can now remove the bowl from the windshield and peel back the adhesive backing. Use your cloth to wipe up and resin the drips down the windshield. Use a razor blade to trim off excess resin over the stone chip, and let the resin dry by parking your car in the sun.
